Tracing the Journey of Female DJs in Rwanda

0
Arton Female DJ

About a decade ago, a female DJ set in Rwanda was a rare sight, due to the stereotypes that the night work is for men.

Today however, many women in the entertainment industry are confident to launch their careers and brands in the disc jockeying career that has over the years been dominated by male names only.

As Rwanda joins the rest of the world to mark International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, we look into the rise of female DJs in the Rwandan and how far they have come in the industry dominated by the other gender.

Ira, Sonia, Rugamba, Contact Makeda, and Rusam & Higa are some of the influential names in the industry that carry the breakthrough reputation of female DJs.

Equally talented and ambitious, each of these women had to overcome career challenges to obtain the success they have today. While each success story has a unique track, there is no doubt that these women have one thing in common—keeping Rwandan music lovers on the dance floor.

The rise of female DJs in Rwanda didn’t emerge yesterday, last year, or the year before, it dates way back to when young talents like DJ Ira decided to start the journey of spinning decks and keep revelers on their feet.

Divine Iradukunda, known to many as DJ Ira, is among the first young females to venture in the business of mixing music using her small pioneer DJ controller. At the beginning of 2017, Ira was spotted playing at the grand finale of Miss Rwanda competition, and being the first female DJ to headline the mega show, there was no doubt that the youngster would inspire hundreds.

“When I had just started out as a DJ, many people were surprised to see a young girl working as a DJ, and I think that is why I quickly caught the public eye. I however do not mind the limelight or the publicity that comes with my job. As long as I am doing my job, keeping people happy, and inspiring a young girl out there, it’s all that matters to me,” The young DJ told The New Times when she was only 21-years-old.

Female DJ Rwanda

Today, Ira is not the only professional female DJ in Rwanda as it was back in the days, she has inspired dozens of young girls and made deck spinning career much easier for females who had left it for their brothers.

Another female DJ who is delivering groovy vibes in the industry is Sonia Kayitesi best known as DJ Sonia, one of the youngest in the game that started playing at a Kimironko-based nightclub’s ‘silent disco’ in 2019, and later joined Magic FM.

She has been booked back to back in different pubs and clubs of Kigali, from BelAir bar, and ‘Proppa’ Fridays at Blackstone Lounge, to Riders Lounge and Cocobean, Sonia’s sound and disc spinning skills live everywhere in Kigali.

Speaking to The New Times, DJ Sonia said that deejay work is a very profitable job since she can have as many gigs as possible, play in corporate places and earn a lot of money.

However, she also noted that the profession’s reputation is disturbed by people who perceive female DJs as sex workers, adding that DJs deserve respect as that’s the job that puts food on their tables.

“The problem is still in how people perceive us but with time, there will be less challenges that hinder a female to shine in this career. We are as good as our fellow male DJs,” DJ Sonia said.

Fast rising DJ duo Rusam & Higa are also driving the night life of Kigali with live sessions in different pubs and clubs.

Sharon Higa, 23, and Nadege Rusamaza, 25, who made up the famous DJ duo, describe their work as a means to create a cheerful setting that brings out a happy and fun aroma with music.

The two didn’t particularly start in the DJ work, they were in-fact dancers before delving into the DJ scene. While Higa was a dancer/social media influencer, Nadege was working a regular job, and a dance teacher but has since progressed from both professions.

“Every genre, every artist whether African, American or South African we mix all those to make people happy, bring good vibes and good energy, that’s basically what we do. Any girl out here can do the same,” Higa, a member of the duo, recently told The New Times.

With their current success, they have long-term plans of creating a label to establish their own music as well as create job accessing fields for girls that are interested in DJ work, but feel insecure about their safety due to the field being largely male-dominated.

Offering these opportunities will create more of a balance in the DJ scene and introduce more female DJs just like Higa and Nadege.

Every Rwandan child should go to school for the country to prosper, otherwise there will be consequences. And President Paul Kagame reiterated that every child, whether has parents or not, should be in school as a matter of priority.

Rwanda’s education sector represents 31.2% of the country’s 11 million population-with human resource acting as a major source of Rwanda’s economy.

However, government has of recent faced an alarming issue of continued school dropouts and street children. “Every Rwandan child should be in school not on the streets.

Government has provided free schools and no parent should stand in the way of their children education,” the President said while addressing Kayonza district residents in Mukarange sector.

The President was in Kayonza district for the monthly community work (Umuganda).

President Kagame warned parents and government officials and all Rwandans to make children’s education a priority.

Statistics indicate 20% of Rwanda’s $2.47 billion national budget (approximately $494 million) goes to education.

With this, President Kagame reminded Kayonza residents that there should be no reason why their children roam around streets. Kayonza district, like in other parts of the country, faces the issue of street children.

Last month, 100 former street children in the district were sent to Rukara Transit Centre to undergo civic education and vocational training.

Gender and Family promotion Minister Dr. Diane Gahumba has promised to ensure no Rwandan children are seen on streets.

“No child deserves to live on the streets, a child has rights to have a family, to go to school and get every kind of treatment and care.”

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, President Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame, participated in the construction of feeder roads as per the district master plan.

After the exercise, the President said; “Umuganda is about all of us joining hands and working together to develop ourselves.”

The President has been touring Eastern Province since Thursday.

Kigali to host 5th Aviation Stakeholders Convention in May

Aviation Convention

Come May 7-9 2016, the 5th Aviation stakeholder convention   will kick off at Kigali Serena hotel in Rwanda. The Convention is aimed at creating a sustainable network chain in supply and air management giving way to competitive opportunities in the aviation business in across the continent. The convention organizers the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) in partnership Rwanda with RwandAir confirmed the event through a press briefing at Kigali international Airport on 10th march 2016 spear headed by Dr Elijah Chingosho the secretary general of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), who was quoted saying that “delegates from over 45 countries across the globe will take part in the conference that will be held at the Kigali Serena Hotel.

In many travel occasions, several travelers miss Rwanda’s beautiful capital to go gorilla tracking, relax by lake kivu or even head out to see the wild chimpanzees in Nyungwe or wild animals in Akagera National park. At most trips in Rwanda give Kigali half a day especially to explore the Genocide sites yet it deserves more than that. Apart from the dark thousand hills past, Kigali has a lot to offer in Africa when it comes to travel fun and excitement. It is extremely safe, clean and green, extensive over stunning hills which add to the city’s appealing beauty and nothing can beat the incredible views of the green hills and the quietude that you one experience while here.

The hills also gave Rwanda a new name “the land of thousand hills, the reason for the growing tourist numbers every year. However, an initiative of AFRAA, the 5th Aviation Stakeholders Convention will be convened under the theme: “Winning Together Through Innovation and Collaboration”, and will be co-hosted by RwandAir. The national carrier and also the official carrier of the event. Dr. Chingosho still said that “The conference will provide a platform for users and suppliers of aviation products, solutions and services to showcase new developments and innovations, discuss industry trends, network and forge beneficial partnerships,”.

In history, the event will be held in Kigali for the first time providing exceptional products, exhibition and business opportunity for industry partners and suppliers of equipment, components, solutions and services, according to organizers. RwandAir added that the conference has come at a time when the aviation is going through first-time growth in both passenger and cargo, spurred by huge economic growth and investments in many African countries. On the other hand the national carrier elaborated the convention stakeholder intentions as quoted: “The continent’s airlines are positioning themselves to take advantage of these growth opportunities, with some modernizing their fleet and investing in capacity and infrastructure development. There is also a keen interest by investors (both local and international) in setting up new airlines in some countries.”

The win –win business interaction between aviation stakeholders will unit operators and support service providers together for further prosperity in Africa aviation. The convention has attracted attention of many thousand stake holders across the world even  aviation bodies gave their opinion about the conference. According to the continental aviation body, the Aviation Stakeholders Convention aims to foster dialogue, build sustainable networks in supply chain management, create a competitive environment for business and improve the aviation support base in Africa.

The CEO for RwandAir just confirmed the event by promising the world that the forthcoming conference is a very big vote of confidence in Rwanda. “It means that Rwanda has become an important player in Africa’s aviation industry,” he said, adding that Kigali will play host to this event because RwandAir has stamped its mark on Africa’s aviation industry. As Rwanda hosts the event, the country will get a grand opportunity to introduce its business opportunities, tourist attraction opening doors for more delegates to engage in different Rwanda safari tours especially culture, wildlife and Rwanda primate holidays.

PV Project at Rwanda Genocide Museum Begins Operation

0

A memorial to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda is to be powered almost entirely from solar following the completion of a PV system on the site. The project was completed earlier this month at the Genocide Memorial in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.

Details of the project’s size have been withheld for customer confidentiality reasons, but David John Frenkil, founder and managing director of Centennial Generating Co, the company behind the project, said the system would meet the majority of the memorial site’s electricity needs.

“The project will reduce most of the need for power during sunlight hours. The memorial centre is the most visited tourist site in the country and it’s quite large in terms of its energy demands, so it’s pretty great to remove most of the power needs and we sell them the power at a rate that’s cheaper than they get from the utility,” Frenkil said.

Later in the year Frenkil said battery storage units would be added to the solar system to provide additional protection against power outages. Frenkil said the expected storage system would provide two hours of battery back up, safeguarding against most power shortages.

“Our data shows that roughly 85% of power shortages [in Kigali] are less than two hours. So that means that by providing at least two hours of battery storage we can mitigate most of the need for standby diesel,” Frenkil told PV Tech.

Centennial is a newly formed company that is targeting principally the commercial and industrial segment in sub-Saharan Africa.

Frenkil said that with much of the current investment in African solar going to small off-grid systems or large utility arrays, there was a need for investment in projects of an intermediate size that would help businesses cut their power costs and avoid problems associated with unreliable supply.

“Centennial focuses on a currently under-addressed challenge for commercial and industrial customers in and near urban centres that need more affordable and reliable power supply,” he said.

Under Centennial’s model, the company finances, installs, owns, operates and maintains the systems it builds. Frenkil said it had a pipeline of PPA in progress with businesses such as hotels, office buildings and factories.

The second, battery phase of the Genocide Memorial project is due to be completed later this year.

Kigali Genocide Memorial Goes Solar

0
Kigali Genocide Memorial Goes Solar

Last week a solar system developed by Centennial Generating Co. became operational at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Established by the Aegis Trust in 2004 at the request of the Rwandan Government and Kigali City Council at the site where some 250,000 victims of the genocide against the Tutsi lie buried, the Kigali Genocide Memorial continues to be run by Aegis today on behalf of CNLG (Rwanda’s National Commission for the Fight against Genocide) as a place both of remembrance and learning for a new generation.

The solar project, installed at no upfront cost, will meet the majority of the centre’s power needs during sunlight hours, helping to reduce power costs and the carbon footprint of the memorial. During Phase 2 of the project, scheduled for later this year, Centennial will fit the solar system with battery storage. This will reduce the memorial’s need for diesel fuelled standby power generation.

“The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a historic place and will continue to be so for many generations to come,” said Honore Gatera, Manager of the Kigali Genocide Memorial. “We are working hard to ensure that the memorial is sustainable, both financially and environmentally. Through our partnership with Centennial, the memorial is a going green. Instead of requiring upfront capital, Centennial is selling us the electricity generated by the solar system at a discount compared to our current power costs. This will allow us to dedicate more funds to our remembrance and peace education programmes.”

The majority of solar investment in markets throughout the African continent is currently based in rural areas for pay-as-you-go solar kits in villages and large utility-scale projects that sell electricity into the national grid.

Noting this, Founder and Managing Director of Centennial, David John Frenkil, said, “While these rural solar projects are extremely important for the region’s development, Centennial focuses on a currently under-addressed challenge for commercial and industrial customers in and near urban centres that need more affordable and reliable power supply. In a region with an average age under 21, which is also currently experiencing an unprecedented demographic shift to cities, we are deploying on-site distributed power systems for customers like the Kigali Genocide Memorial because African markets can’t rely only on centralised power plants with four-to-five year development horizons.”

The solar project will provide training programmes for renewable energy operations and maintenance skills in coordination with Centennial and the non-profit organisation Women for Women International.

The solar system is located on a new section of the memorial café, a space that will be commissioned in April. Contractors for the project included C4 Construction Company, through its General Manager Bruce MacDonald and Project Manager Jean Marcel Ngabo, which built the café expansion. PowerGen Renewable Energy, led by Sam Slaughter and Mark Wopicho, supported in system design and installation of the solar system. The expansion of the café was designed by Robert Rubarema for Landmark Architects.
