Things to See

Situated right the centre of the country, Kigali’s splendid natural location makes it a visitor’s paradise. It has a number of breathtaking viewpoints along its hills that will leave the visitor asking for more. Though some parts of the city are still affected by famine and refugee problems resulting from the civil war, it has regained much of its pleasant air.

The main shopping and commercial area is around the Hotel Mille Collines, with the government district on the neighbouring Kaciyiru hill. The markets, the handicrafts, the Muslim quarter and a new genocide memorial being built in Gisozi are some of the main places of interest. The Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is the most popular mountain gorilla sanctuary and is also home to five extinct volcanoes. This is where Dian Fossey spent 18 years studying the impressive and fascinating beasts until poachers murdered her in 1985. Lake Ngezi is also worth a visit among a host of other breathtaking landscapes.

Another must do in Kigali is to visit in the fantastic bamboo and hagenia woodlands, home to one of the four gorilla groups habituated for tourism.
